When Roy Rogers rides into
any town, thousands of people are on hand to cheer and say "hello"
to the King of the Cowboys. That's because he has long been recognized
as the romanticized version of the legendary Old West, and everyone who
has ever fancied being a cowpoke or cowgirl knows about Roy Rogers. For
over half a century he has been entertaining youngsters and grownups alike
and his continuing ability to "draw a crowd" is truly remarkable
whether he's appearing by himself or with his wife, Dale Evans. Leonard
Slye (Roy's real name) was one of the three founding members of the Sons
of the Pioneers, and was with the Pioneers when he auditioned for a role
as a singing cowboy with Republic Pictures and legally became Roy Rogers.
Roy starred in 87 musical westerns for Republic, becoming the No. 1 box
office star in all westerns for 12 consecutive years.
In 35 of the features,
Roy was teamed with Dale Evans. Roy married his leading lady, Dale, in
1947 and they quickly became (and remain to this day) one of America's
most beloved couples. They have reared a family of nine children and have
sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Their many accomplishments
are too numerous to list here, and are wellknown by their many fans. Throughout
their careers, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans have represented honesty, decency,
and faith in God and Country. With remarkable transition from one generation
to another, the Pioneer popularity continues to grow. With a countless
list of awards, honors and recognitions, the Pioneers are best described
as "not getting older--just getting better!"
The Sons of the
Pioneers are Professional Members of the Western Music Association and
were inducted into the Western Music Hall of Fame at the very first WMA
Hall of Fame inductions in 1989.
Roy Rogers passed
away in 1998 and Dale Evans in 2001.
